El Centro is the working heart of Puerto Escondido — the neighborhood where the town is a town first and a resort second. Mornings start at the Mercado Benito Juárez with the smell of coffee and fresh masa; fishing boats unload their catch on Playa Principal; and in the evening the Adoquín, the pedestrian stretch of Avenida Pérez Gasga, fills with families, street food and souvenir stalls.

Staying here means living at local prices and local rhythms. Accommodation is the best value in town — simple hotels, guesthouses and apartments — and every colectivo, taxi route and bus line converges downtown, making it the most connected base for exploring the whole coast.

Choose El Centro if you want authentic, everyday Mexico with the beach a short walk away: less curated than Zicatela or La Punta, and all the more interesting for it.

Beaches & the bay

El Centro fronts Playa Principal, the town's original beach, where fishing pangas bob at anchor and locals swim in the mornings. The water here is calmer than Zicatela's, though shared with boat traffic; it flows east into Playa Marinero, a decent spot for a casual dip and beginner surf.

• For the clearest swimming and snorkeling, the coves of Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo are just west of downtown — walkable or a very short taxi ride.
• From Playa Principal you can arrange fishing trips and dolphin- and turtle-watching boat tours directly with local captains.
• Zicatela's long beach and its surf spectacle start immediately southeast of the bay.

The malecón walkway along the bay makes for an easy sunset stroll, with fishermen mending nets and pelicans working the shallows — the everyday maritime life that the resort neighborhoods have largely left behind.

Food & nightlife

Downtown eats are the cheapest and most local in Puerto Escondido. The Mercado Benito Juárez is the anchor: comedores serve breakfasts and set-menu lunches for a fraction of beach-strip prices, and the produce, cheese and tortilla stands are where the town actually shops. Around it, taquerías and seafood spots keep things honest.

By night, the action moves to the Adoquín — Avenida Pérez Gasga's pedestrian zone — which fills with strolling families, street performers, bars and open-air restaurants. It is livelier than Rinconada but far tamer than Zicatela's club strip; think micheladas and people-watching rather than DJs at 3 a.m.

Getting around

El Centro is Puerto Escondido's transport hub. Colectivos and taxis radiate from downtown to every beach and neighborhood, and the intercity bus terminals for coastal and Oaxaca City routes sit in or near the center — convenient if you are arriving overland or planning day trips.

• Zicatela is a 10–15 minute walk (or 5 minutes by taxi); Rinconada and Carrizalillo about 5 minutes by taxi.
• Colectivos along the highway are the budget way to reach La Punta or Bacocho.
• The neighborhood itself is hilly in places — check how steep the walk from your rental to the beach is if mobility matters.

Who should stay in El Centro?

Budget travelers get the best price-per-night in town. Culture-first visitors get the market, the bay and everyday Mexican life on their doorstep. Long-stay guests appreciate real-world services — banks, clinics, hardware stores — that beach neighborhoods lack.

It is not the polished beach-holiday postcard: streets are busy, architecture is functional, and daytime traffic is real. But if you'd rather eat where the taxi drivers eat and pay local prices while staying ten minutes from every beach, downtown is quietly the smartest base in Puerto Escondido.

When to come: El Centro is at its best during the Fiestas de Noviembre, when parades, surf contests and cultural events fill the town, and through the lively December–April high season. In low season it stays fully functional — this is where locals live year-round — so services, market stalls and comedores never close the way some beach-strip businesses do.
