How to Get to Puerto Escondido from Mexico City and Oaxaca (2026 Guide)

For decades, getting to Puerto Escondido was part of the adventure: either you paid for a flight with layovers, or you braved seven hours of mountain curves from Oaxaca City. That's changed. Today there are direct flights from Mexico City in just over an hour, and the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway — opened in 2024 after more than a decade of construction — cut the trip from Oaxaca City down to about 2.5 to 3 hours. By plane: the fast option

The Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) is ridiculously well located: 5-10 minutes from downtown, 12-15 from Zicatela, and 20-25 from La Punta. It handled more than 917,000 passengers in 2023 and has become one of the fastest-growing airports in the country, adding more frequencies every season.

From Mexico City

There are daily direct flights on Aeroméxico, Volaris, and VivaAerobus from AICM (plus a few frequencies from AIFA). The flight takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Booking ahead, a one-way ticket runs 1,200 to 2,500 MXN; in high season or booking last-minute, it can climb past 3,500-4,500 MXN. Rule of thumb: for December, January, and Easter week, book your flights at least 2-3 months in advance.

From Oaxaca City

Regional carriers like Aerotucán fly small planes between Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido in about 30-40 minutes, with typical one-way fares of 2,000 to 3,000 MXN. It's a scenic experience (you fly low over the sierra), but with limited luggage allowance and vulnerability to weather cancellations. Since the highway opened, most travelers now prefer going overland.

From the airport to your accommodation

The new highway from Oaxaca: the game changer

The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway (the 175D) is the project that transformed the Oaxaca coast. Before 2024, traveling from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido meant 6.5 to 7 hours on the winding federal highway 131 or 175, with car sickness nearly guaranteed. Today, the toll highway cuts the trip to 2.5 to 3 hours, with total tolls running around 200 MXN per car.

The route heads south out of Oaxaca on highway 175, joins the toll road at Barranca Larga (near Ejutla), and descends to Ventanilla on the coast, about 20 minutes from Puerto Escondido. Practical tips: fill up on gas before leaving Oaxaca (services along the highway are still scarce), drive during the day if you can (fog banks form high in the sierra), and don't blindly trust your GPS — some navigation apps still try to route you along the old 131.

Shared vans from Oaxaca: cheap and frequent

Van lines (suburbans and sprinters) are the local traveler's workhorse: they depart several times a day from Oaxaca City, run on the highway, and charge around 350 to 500 MXN per person. They reach downtown Puerto Escondido in about 3 to 3.5 hours with one stop along the way. They're the best value for time and money if you're traveling light; the downside is tight seating, and they get uncomfortable with small kids or a lot of luggage.

Overnight bus from Mexico City: the classic budget option

If budget calls the shots, or you simply prefer not to fly, ADO/OCC runs direct routes to Puerto Escondido from Mexico City (from the TAPO or Taxqueña terminals, depending on the departure). The overnight trip takes 12 to 15 hours and typically costs 1,100 to 1,800 MXN depending on class and how far ahead you book. First-class and GL buses come with air conditioning, restrooms, and reclining seats: you fall asleep at TAPO and wake up with the Pacific in front of you.

OCC also runs routes from Oaxaca City down to the coast, though vans on the highway are now faster and more frequent for that leg.

Driving your own car

Coming by car gives you total freedom once you're on the coast (beaches like Manialtepec, Chacahua, or Mazunte are all within easy reach). From Mexico City it's about 780-850 km: the most comfortable route runs via the toll highway to Oaxaca (~4.5-5 hours) and then the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway to the coast — a full day of driving, roughly 8-9 effective hours plus stops. Budget around 1,200-1,600 MXN in tolls and gas per leg. Avoid driving at night through the mountain stretches, and once in town, keep in mind that several streets in La Punta are still unpaved.

Tips for finding cheap flights to PXM

The Mexico City–Puerto Escondido route has gotten competitive, and that works in your favor if you know how to shop:

• Book 6 to 10 weeks ahead for regular dates; for December, January, and Easter week, stretch that to 3-4 months.
• Fly midweek: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday departures tend to run 20-30% cheaper than Fridays and Sundays, the route's busiest days.
• Compare AICM against AIFA: some flights out of Felipe Ángeles airport are noticeably cheaper; just factor in the cost of getting to the airport before deciding.

The old route: the curves of highways 131 and 175

Before the toll highway, every road to Puerto Escondido meant hours of mountain curves, and those routes are still there — and still make sense for a certain kind of traveler. Highway 175 passes through San José del Pacífico, the famous village in the clouds at 2,500 meters of elevation: many travelers break up the Oaxaca-to-coast trip with a night there, among pine forests and temazcal steam baths, before descending to Pochutla and the beach. It's the scenic route, not the efficient one: about 6-7 effective hours of driving with continuous curves.

If you get carsick, this is a route-deciding detail: on the 175D toll highway, motion sickness is minimal; on the traditional 131 and 175, it's nearly guaranteed. A dramamine tablet half an hour before departure, the front seat, and a light stomach — local van drivers know the drill by heart.

What about flying into Huatulco?

The Huatulco airport (HUX) receives more domestic and international flights than PXM, sometimes at better rates. It's about 110 km from Puerto Escondido: 1.5 to 2 hours along the coastal highway 200. Coming from other cities?

If you're departing from Guadalajara, Monterrey, or Tijuana, first check whether there's a seasonal direct flight (airlines open and close these routes based on demand); if not, connecting through Mexico City is the natural choice. From the southeast (Mérida, Cancún), connecting through the capital is almost always the way to go too.
