Puerto Escondido in April: Semana Santa and the Season's End

Puerto Escondido in April is really two different months stitched together. For one week — Semana Santa, the week before Easter Sunday — the town fills to a capacity it doesn't see any other time of year: domestic tourists from Oaxaca City, Mexico City, and Puebla arrive in force, prices jump, and rentals that were sitting half-empty in March book out completely. Outside that single week, April is quieter than March, still dry, still hot, and still one of the better surf windows of the year. Knowing which April you're booking for changes everything about how you plan the trip.

Semana Santa: the one week that changes the whole month

Semana Santa (Holy Week) is Mexico's biggest domestic travel week, and Puerto Escondido — close enough to Oaxaca City and Mexico City for a long weekend, far enough to feel like a real vacation — is one of the coast's top destinations for it. The date moves every year (it falls on the week before Easter Sunday, so anywhere from mid-March to late April), which means it doesn't always land in April at all. When it does, expect:

• Every category of rental booked solid weeks, sometimes months, in advance — this is the one week hosts don't discount.
• Beaches at genuine capacity, especially *Playa Principal* and *Zicatela*, with far more families and domestic tourists than the international-surfer crowd that dominates the rest of the year.
• Restaurants and bars running full, with waits at places that are empty the rest of April.
• Traffic on the one main road through town, particularly around El Centro and the airport road.

Weather: the last hot, dry stretch before the rains

Outside Semana Santa week, April's weather is a continuation of March with a bit more heat and humidity building toward the end. It's still technically dry season, but the shift toward summer is noticeable by the last week:

• Daytime highs: 31–34°C (88–93°F) — the hottest stretch of the dry season, with humidity climbing steadily.
• Rain: mostly absent early in the month; occasional short afternoon showers can start appearing by late April as the wet season approaches.
• Sea temperature: 27–29°C (81–84°F), warm enough that the ocean starts to feel like a bath by afternoon.
• Humidity: the most noticeable change from March — mornings are still comfortable, afternoons start to feel heavier.

If heat and humidity bother you, this is a month to plan around the middle of the day: beach mornings, shaded lunches, and evening activities once the sun drops.

Whale season winds down

April is the tail end of Oaxaca's whale-watching window (roughly December through March, per NOAA Fisheries), and by April most of the humpback population has continued its migration south. A handful of tour operators still run trips into the first week or two of the month, but sightings are no longer reliable — if whale watching is the priority, February and March are the months to book, not April.

Surf keeps building

Where whale season is winding down, surf is doing the opposite. April sits in the run-up to the bigger summer swells, and Zicatela's Mexican Pipeline is noticeably more powerful than in January or February — a good month for intermediate-to-advanced surfers, and a month where beginners should stick more firmly to *La Punta* and the mellower breaks rather than testing themselves against Zicatela's main peak.

Rates: the biggest spike of the year, then a drop

April's pricing is the most extreme of any month on the calendar, because it contains both a huge spike and a return to normal high-season rates once the spike passes.

Where to base yourself

During Semana Santa itself, *El Centro* and *Playa Principal* get the densest crowds — if you want the festival energy, stay close; if you'd rather watch from a distance, *Bacocho* and *Rinconada* stay noticeably calmer even during the peak week.
