Entire place is not a building type — it is a booking arrangement. It tells you what you are renting rather than what it looks like: the whole unit, to yourself, for the length of your stay. That unit might be a one-bedroom apartment above a taquería in El Centro, a three-bedroom house on a sandy street in La Punta, or a walled villa with a pool in Rinconada. What they share is the terms: you get the front door, the kitchen, the bathroom and the outdoor space, and nobody else is booked into the property while you are there.

The distinction matters because the alternative categories look similar in photos. A private room gives you a lockable bedroom but shared kitchen, bathroom or living space. A shared room gives you a bed in a room with other travelers. Both can be excellent value in a surf town where hostels and co-livings are part of the culture — but if you booked expecting to cook breakfast in your own kitchen and found four other guests in it, the problem was the category, not the property.

What "entire place" includes, and what it does not

Booking an entire place in Puerto Escondido generally means the following are yours alone for the dates you booked:

• The kitchen — whether it is a full stove-and-oven setup or a kitchenette with two burners and a fridge, you are the only one cooking in it.
• The bathroom, without a schedule to work around.
• The living and sleeping areas, and the private outdoor space attached to the unit — terrace, patio, balcony or roof.
• The entrance, usually with your own key, code or lockbox.

What it does not automatically promise is that you have the whole building or the whole lot. Plenty of entire-place listings here sit inside a small building of two to six units, or in a walled compound with several casitas around a shared garden. In those cases the pool, the roof terrace, the laundry area or the parking may be shared with neighbours, and the host may live in another unit on the property. None of that contradicts the category — it just means the shared amenities are outside your unit, not inside it.

If you want no shared anything at all, look for a standalone house or a listing that states exclusive use of the pool and grounds, and confirm it with the host before you pay.

Entire place versus private room versus shared room

Puerto Escondido has a genuinely mixed accommodation market, and each arrangement suits a different trip.

• Entire place — best for couples, families, groups, remote workers and anyone staying more than a few nights. You control the noise, the schedule, the food and the temperature. It costs the most per night and the least per person once there are three or more of you.
• Private room — a bedroom of your own inside a house, guesthouse or co-living, with shared kitchen and often a shared terrace. Cheaper, sociable, and the easiest way to meet people if you are travelling alone. Common in La Punta and around Zicatela.
• Shared room — a hostel dorm bed. The cheapest option in town and a real part of the surf-travel scene, but with no privacy and no control over when the lights go out.

Two people staying a week will often find an entire studio costs little more than two private rooms, and comes with a kitchen that saves several restaurant meals. Groups of four or more almost always come out ahead booking one whole unit.

Self check-in, keys and hosts who live off site

Because nobody else is in the unit, entire-place stays usually run on self check-in: a lockbox, a keypad code, or a caretaker who meets you at the gate with a key. Flights into Puerto Escondido and the overnight buses from Oaxaca City both land at awkward hours, so this is a real advantage — but it puts the responsibility on you to arrive with clear instructions.

Before you travel, get the exact street address and a pin on the map rather than just a neighborhood name. Many streets in La Punta and the outer colonias are unpaved, unlit and inconsistently signed, and taxi drivers navigate by landmarks rather than numbers. Ask your host for the landmark they would give a driver. Save the check-in instructions offline, because mobile data can be patchy on arrival.

Also confirm who to call if something breaks. An entire place with an off-site host means there is no reception desk — a good listing has a caretaker, manager or neighbour who can be at the property within the hour.

What to verify before you book

The category answers the privacy question, but not the practical ones. Puerto Escondido has a few local realities worth checking in writing before you pay:

• Air conditioning, and in which rooms. Many units have AC in the bedrooms only, and fans elsewhere. From March to June the coast is hot and humid enough that this matters.
• Water and power. Ask whether the property has a tinaco or cistern and a backup for outages. Both are normal here and a well-run rental plans for them.
• Internet. If you work remotely, ask for the connection type — fibre, cable or Starlink — rather than a yes or no.
• What is actually shared. Pool, roof, laundry, parking. Ask directly rather than inferring from the photos.
• Noise. Zicatela and parts of La Punta have beach bars that run late; El Centro has traffic and roosters. Ask what you will hear at 2 a.m. and at 6 a.m.
