Planning a Wedding in Puerto Escondido: Venues and Group Rentals

How to plan a wedding in Puerto Escondido: why the ceremony belongs at a licensed venue and not in a rental villa, when to set the date, the legal paperwork, and how to house 20 to 60 guests across villas and rooms.

Planning a wedding in Puerto Escondido means solving two problems that look like one: where you say the vows and where everyone sleeps. Couples often picture a villa that does both, and that is where most plans go wrong. Almost every private house on this coast forbids events, so the smart setup is a licensed venue for the ceremony and party, and a cluster of rentals for the couple, the families and the friends who fly in for the week. This guide covers both halves, plus dates, paperwork and the logistics that keep 40 guests happy.

The venue is not the villa

Start with the rule that shapes everything else: the rental villas we list are not wedding venues. Every one of them has events switched off in its house rules, and several say so in plain words. Booking a villa for "a family stay" and then bringing in a sound system, caterers and 80 guests is the fastest way to lose a deposit, and in a residential street it can end with the police at the gate.

What the house rules actually say

  • Casa Emelina, a beachfront estate for up to 14 guests, states it does not rent for events or weddings and takes bookings of at least 3 nights.
  • Aloha Punta and Punta Vista, both 10-guest villas in the La Punta area, prohibit parties and event organization and set quiet hours from 10 pm to 10 am, with fines for breaking them.
  • Casa Ámbar, a smaller eco-house in the same area, bans parties and events and keeps quiet hours from 9 pm.

That does not rule out a relaxed dinner for the people staying in the house. If you want one, ask the host in writing, before you book: how many people may be at the house, until what time, and whether outside staff can come in. A yes in writing protects you; a "should be fine" on the phone does not.

Where ceremonies and receptions happen instead

Weddings in Puerto Escondido are held at places licensed for them: hotels and beach clubs with event spaces, restaurants that close for private dinners, and event gardens outside the town. These venues handle the things a villa host cannot, such as sound permits, a kitchen sized for 60 plates, bathrooms for guests, parking and a plan B if it rains. Remember too that in Mexico the strip of land next to the sea is federal land (the zona federal marítimo terrestre), so a ceremony on the open beach usually needs permission; ask your venue or planner who arranges it.

When to get married in Puerto Escondido

The coast has two seasons. The dry season runs from November to April: clear skies, warm evenings and almost no rain on the day, which is why most destination weddings land here. The rainy season runs from May to October, usually as sunny mornings and a downpour late in the afternoon or at night. That timing matters for a 6 pm ceremony, so book a venue with a covered area if you choose these months. The eastern Pacific hurricane season officially runs from mid-May to the end of November; our month-by-month weather guide has the details.

Then check the calendar against demand. Christmas to New Year, Semana Santa and July–August are the busiest weeks of the year: villas for 10+ guests go first, flights cost more and venues book out. A wedding in late January, February or November gets dry-season weather with more choice of houses.

Decide early whether the Puerto Escondido wedding will be the legal one. A civil marriage in Mexico goes through the Registro Civil, and foreign couples usually need passports, birth certificates with an apostille translated into Spanish by a certified translator, witnesses, and sometimes medical tests. Requirements and lead times change by state and municipality (Puerto Escondido belongs to the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec), so confirm the list with the local office before you set the date, and ask whether the judge can officiate at your venue. Your own government's guidance helps too; the UK's marriage abroad service is a good example of what to check.

Many couples skip the paperwork: they sign at the registry office at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the coast. It removes the translations and the deadlines, and the day itself looks exactly the same to the guests.

Group rentals: housing the whole wedding

This is where a rental site helps most. Hotels near the venue fill up and split the group; a few entire villas keep families together, give you a place for the morning-after breakfast and often cost less per person than rooms. Here is how the inventory on our site maps onto a typical guest list. Rates are the "from" prices on each listing as of October 2026, approximate (about 18 MXN to the dollar), and they rise in high season.

The couple's villa

Choose a house close to the venue and easy to reach for hair, make-up and photographers. In La Punta, Aloha Punta has four en-suite bedrooms, a rooftop jacuzzi under a large palapa, Starlink internet and daily cleaning included, which matters the morning after. Its quiet hours (10 pm) suit a couple who party at the venue and come home to sleep.

The wedding-party house

For bridesmaids, groomsmen and close friends, Casa Rhino takes up to 16 guests on a beach inside a gated community with 24-hour security, about 20 minutes from the airport according to its listing, with an optional cook. For a bigger family block, Casa del Mar sleeps up to 21 in seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and includes breakfast. Both are outside town, so plan transport.

Guests who want a room, not a house

Not every guest wants to share. Send them the full list of accommodations filtered for two guests, and give them your dates early: rooms near the venue sell out too. Our guide to villas for 10–16 people explains the bed, bathroom and cost-per-person checks for the big houses.

Most guests will fly into Puerto Escondido airport (PXM), many with a connection in Mexico City. Send the dates six to nine months ahead so they catch reasonable fares. On the ground, Uber does not operate in Puerto Escondido: book a shuttle van for the venue run and a set of taxis for the return at night, and put the pick-up times on the invitation website.

Two safety notes for the welcome email. The open beaches here, including Zicatela and Bacocho, are not swimming beaches: strong surf and rip currents. Point guests to the villa pools and to the US National Weather Service rip current guide. And sunset ceremonies on the beach mean mosquitoes later: ask the venue about repellent.

Oaxacan touches worth adding

Oaxaca has its own wedding traditions, and venues here know them. A calenda is a festive procession with a brass band, giant puppet figures and the marmota, a large cloth balloon carried on a pole; it makes a joyful walk from the ceremony to dinner. Mezcal from the state is the natural welcome drink, and guests in traditional dress, like the women's embroidered blouses and flower headdresses, add colour to photos.

Before you send the save-the-dates, lock the order: venue and date first, then the couple's villa, then the group houses, then rooms for everyone else. Browse every entire villa on the site to see which ones are free on your dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we hold our wedding at a rental villa in Puerto Escondido?

Generally no. The villas we list prohibit events, and some, like Casa Emelina, say they do not rent for weddings. Hold the ceremony at a licensed venue and use the villas to house guests.

What is the best month for a wedding in Puerto Escondido?

November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable weather. Late January, February and November avoid the Christmas, Semana Santa and summer peaks.

Can foreigners get legally married in Puerto Escondido?

Yes, through the Registro Civil, usually with apostilled and translated birth certificates, passports and witnesses. Requirements vary by municipality, so confirm them locally; many couples marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here.

How many villas do we need for 40 guests?

Roughly: one 10-guest villa for the couple and parents, one 16-guest house for the wedding party, and hotel rooms or apartments for the remaining 14 or so guests, depending on how many are couples.

How far ahead should we book accommodation?

As soon as the venue and date are fixed. There are only a few villas for 10+ guests, and for dates in December, Semana Santa or July they fill months ahead.
