Rinconada, Puerto Escondido: 2026 Rental Guide to Restaurants, Beaches, and Prices
Rinconada is the quiet, walkable side of Puerto Escondido: a restaurant boulevard, the staircase down to Carrizalillo, and rentals priced below the surf strips. Here is what it costs in 2026 and who should book there.
Rinconada, Puerto Escondido is the neighborhood people tend to choose on their second trip. It sits on the western side of town, across the bay from Zicatela, and it is built around one long, paved boulevard lined with cafés, restaurants, bakeries, pharmacies and small grocery stores. At the end of its side streets is the staircase down to Playa Carrizalillo, the calmest swimming cove in town. You give up the beach-break energy of Zicatela and La Punta; in exchange you get sidewalks, quieter nights and rentals that usually cost less than the same space on the surf strips. This guide covers what a Rinconada rental costs in 2026, which beaches you can actually swim at, how eating out works on the boulevard, and who this part of town suits.
Where Rinconada is and what it feels like
Rinconada is a planned residential district (a fraccionamiento) between the main bay and Bacocho, on the airport side of Puerto Escondido. The layout is the first thing you notice: wide paved streets, street lighting, real sidewalks and a central boulevard where most of the neighborhood's shops and restaurants are concentrated. Locals often just say "la Rinconada" when they mean that strip.
Daily life is calmer than anywhere near the Zicatela break. Mornings start with coffee and fresh bread on the boulevard, middays are for the beach, and by 11 pm most streets are quiet. That rhythm is exactly why families, couples and long-stay remote workers end up here — and why travelers who want bars within stumbling distance usually don't.
- Walkable: the boulevard, Carrizalillo and many rentals sit within a 5–15 minute walk of each other.
- Close to the airport: Puerto Escondido airport (PXM) is roughly a 5–10 minute taxi ride away.
- A taxi from the surf: Zicatela and La Punta are on the far side of town, roughly 10–20 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.
Beaches near Rinconada: where you can and can't swim
The beaches are the main reason to sleep in Rinconada, but they are not all equal. Two rules matter: the coves on the Rinconada side are the safest swimming water in Puerto Escondido, and the open beach at Bacocho is not for swimming at all.
Playa Carrizalillo
Carrizalillo is a small horseshoe cove reached by a staircase of more than 150 steps from the top of the cliff. Down at the sand you'll find calm, clear water most days, palapas renting chairs and umbrellas, and surf schools teaching beginners on its small, gentle waves. Two practical notes: the stairs are a real climb on the way back up in the midday heat, so factor that in with young kids or limited mobility, and the cove fills up by late morning in high season — go early if you want shade.

East of Rinconada, toward the main bay, the twin coves of Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo are the other calm swimming option, with easier access than Carrizalillo's staircase and seafood palapas right on the sand. From most Rinconada streets they are a short taxi ride or a longer walk. Our guide to 15 beaches of Puerto Escondido compares them with the rest of the coastline.
Playa Bacocho: sunsets, not swimming
West of Rinconada, the long open beach at Bacocho takes the full force of the Pacific. It is beautiful at sunset and popular for walks and photos, but the waves and currents are strong — do not swim there. If you are not sure how to read a rip current, the US National Weather Service has a clear rip current safety guide. The Bacocho area is also a good alternative base if Rinconada is booked, with larger properties and pools.
Restaurants and daily life on the boulevard
Rinconada's boulevard is where the neighborhood eats. Rather than recommend individual places — openings and closings move fast on this coast, and a list from last season is often wrong by the next — here is what the strip reliably offers, so you know what you're booking into:
- Coffee and breakfast: specialty coffee shops, bakeries and juice bars open from early morning — the neighborhood's busiest hours.
- Seafood: ceviche, aguachile, shrimp and fish tacos and tostadas, and pescado a la talla (grilled, adobo-rubbed fish) at casual seafood spots.
- Mexican staples: taquerías and Oaxacan dishes like tlayudas and mole, often more affordable in the evening.
- International: pizza, pasta, sushi, and vegetarian or vegan cafés aimed at the long-stay crowd.
- Groceries and errands: small supermarkets, organic and health-food stores, pharmacies, laundries and ATMs, so you can cook in your rental and handle errands on foot.
The boulevard is lively at dinner time but quiet late at night; for bars and live music you'll take a taxi to La Punta or Zicatela. That trade-off — a good dinner a few minutes' walk away, then a silent street — is the main reason people pick Rinconada over the surf strips.

What a Rinconada rental costs in 2026
Rinconada sits in the middle of Puerto Escondido's price range: above El Centro, generally below beachfront Zicatela and La Punta for the same space. Most inventory is apartments, mini lofts and family houses, many with a shared or private pool; there are few hostels. The ranges below are approximate nightly rates based on typical 2026 listings, with US dollars at roughly 18.5 MXN per dollar (check the Banco de México exchange rate before you book).
| Rental type | Low season (May–Oct, excl. holidays) | High season (Dec–Apr, holidays) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / mini loft | 900–1,700 MXN (US$50–90) | 1,500–2,800 MXN (US$80–150) | Couples, solo travelers |
| 1–2BR apartment, shared pool | 1,500–3,000 MXN (US$80–160) | 2,500–4,500 MXN (US$135–245) | Couples, small families, remote work |
| 3–4BR house, private pool | 2,500–6,000 MXN (US$135–325) | 4,500–9,000 MXN (US$245–485) | Families, groups of friends |
For a real example of the entry level: the loft 5 minutes from Carrizalillo currently lists at about 993 MXN (around US$54) a night for two guests. Christmas–New Year and Easter week (Semana Santa) run well above the high-season column and sell out first. To see how these numbers compare across town, read rental prices by neighborhood.
Which rental to book in Rinconada
Couples and solo travelers
A studio or mini loft on a side street off the boulevard is the sweet spot: walk to breakfast, walk to Carrizalillo, and pay well below a Zicatela studio. Check for air conditioning — from May to October the nights are hot and humid — and whether there's a shared pool for the afternoons.
Families
Rinconada is the easiest neighborhood in Puerto Escondido for kids: sidewalks for strollers, calm swimming at Carrizalillo, and quiet nights. A 2–3 bedroom house with a private pool takes pressure off the beach stairs on hot afternoons. Ask the host how many minutes the walk to the Carrizalillo staircase really takes and whether there's off-street parking if you rent a car.

Monthly stays are common here, and hosts often discount weeks and months. Before committing, ask for a recent internet speed test, a proper desk and chair, and whether electricity is included — air conditioning running all day in summer can add up on a CFE bill.
Getting around from Rinconada
Inside Rinconada you walk. For everything else, taxis are cheap and plentiful: most rides within town cost roughly 50–100 MXN (approximate — agree on the fare before you get in, and expect more at night). That covers the main bay and El Centro, the restaurants and bars of La Punta, and the surf at Zicatela. If you plan daily trips to the lagoons or to Mazunte, a rental car makes more sense, and Rinconada's wide streets make parking far easier than on the surf strips.
Rinconada vs the rest of Puerto Escondido
Pick Rinconada if your priorities are calm swimming, quiet nights and good food within walking distance. Pick La Punta or Zicatela if surf and nightlife come first, El Centro for the lowest prices and town life, and Bacocho for space and pools. Our neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide compares all of them. When you're ready, the Rinconada area page lists what's available, and all accommodations lets you filter by dates, bedrooms and pool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rinconada a good area to stay in Puerto Escondido?
Yes, especially for families, couples and longer stays. It is walkable, quiet at night, close to the calmest swimming cove in town (Carrizalillo), and usually cheaper than Zicatela or La Punta for the same space. It is not the right pick if you want to walk to the surf breaks or nightlife.
How far is Rinconada from Zicatela?

Can you swim at the beaches near Rinconada?
At Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo, yes — they are protected coves with calm water most days. Bacocho, just west of Rinconada, has strong waves and currents and is not a swimming beach.
How much does a rental in Rinconada cost?
Approximately 900–1,700 MXN a night for a studio or mini loft in low season, 1,500–3,000 MXN for a 1–2 bedroom apartment, and 2,500–6,000 MXN for a house with a private pool. High season and holidays cost significantly more.
Is Rinconada close to the airport?
Yes. Puerto Escondido airport (PXM) is roughly a 5–10 minute taxi ride from Rinconada, one of the shortest transfers in town.
