Bungalow rentals in Puerto Escondido are the oldest way to do a beach holiday on this coast: a small, self-contained unit with its own bathroom, a bed, a terrace or a hammock, often a kitchenette, and a garden or the sand a few steps away. Long before villas with infinity pools, surfers and backpackers slept in palm-roofed cabañas along Zicatela and the bays further south. This guide explains what the word means today, where to look, what a small stay for two costs in 2026 and how to book one without surprises.

What a bungalow means in Puerto Escondido

There is no legal definition. On the Oaxaca coast, a bungalow is usually a single-storey unit, detached or semi-detached, inside a small property that has several of them around a shared garden, pool or palapa. You get privacy for sleeping and showering; the outdoor space is often shared with a handful of other guests. Most sleep two, some up to four.

It sits between a hotel room and a whole house. Compared with a hotel room you usually gain a door to the outside, a terrace and some way to cook. Compared with a house you give up space and a private pool, and you pay much less. Our comparison of villa vs apartment vs bungalow walks through that choice, and the guide to every property type in Puerto Escondido covers the other labels.

Bungalow, cabaña, mini loft: the labels you will see

  • Bungalow: a self-contained unit, usually with a bathroom and often a kitchenette, in a property with a few others.
  • Cabaña: the rustic version, often wood or palm-thatch, sometimes with a fan rather than air conditioning. Common in Mazunte and Zipolite.
  • Mini loft or studio: the same idea built in concrete, with an open-plan room, a kitchenette and usually air conditioning.
  • Glamping: a tent or tipi on a platform with a real bed and shared facilities.

Read the listing, not the label. The details that change your stay are whether the bathroom is private, whether there is air conditioning or only a fan, and what exactly is shared.

Why the bungalow is still the classic beach stay

The format fits how people actually spend a day here. You are out early for the surf or the beach, back at midday when the sun is hardest, out again for sunset and dinner. A bungalow gives you a cool room, a shower, a fridge for water and fruit, and a hammock for the afternoon, without paying for living rooms you will not use.

It also suits longer stays. Several small properties accept stays of a few weeks, and a kitchenette turns a one-week trip into a month for surfers and remote workers. For couples, it is often the best balance between price and privacy: your own door, your own terrace, nobody in the next bedroom.

Where to look: neighborhoods for a bungalow

Zicatela and La Punta: surf and walkable dinners

The southern end of town is where the cabaña tradition started and where most small, garden-style properties still are. Zicatela runs along the big surf beach; La Punta, at its far end, has the cafés, taco stands and beginner-friendlier waves. Expect more noise on weekend nights near the main strip. Zicatela is for surfing and watching, not for swimming, so a pool or a short ride to a calm bay matters.

Bacocho and Carrizalillo: quiet streets near calm bays

Bacocho, west of the center, is residential and quiet, close to the airport and known for sunsets. Its own beach has strong waves, but Carrizalillo and Coral, the calmer bays, are a few minutes away by car. Small units inside family compounds are common here, at lower rates than La Punta.

El Centro: buses, market and the main bay

Around the main bay and the Adoquín you can walk to the market, the fishing boats and the bus terminals. Bungalow-style places are fewer here than apartments, but El Centro is practical if you arrive without a car.

Further afield: Mazunte and Zipolite

About an hour down the coast, Mazunte and Zipolite are still built mostly of cabañas and small guesthouses, many of them simple, some with fans only. They make a good second base or a few nights away from town; our Mazunte accommodation guide covers the details.

Bungalow rentals in Puerto Escondido: options and prices on our site

The bungalow page lists every property tagged as a bungalow as soon as hosts publish one. Right now most of the small, self-contained stays on our site are labeled as lofts, rooms or glamping rather than bungalows, so the table below groups the ones that work the same way: a private unit for two with its own bathroom. Rates are the listed nightly price in October 2026 and move with season and length of stay; dollar figures assume roughly 18.5 MXN per US dollar (check the Banco de México exchange rate).

Downtown apartmentEl Centro21,100 MXN (US$59)Private entrance, patio, kitchen, air conditioning

For comparison, whole houses with a private pool on our site start at several thousand pesos a night. For two people, a bungalow-style unit costs a fraction of that; a house only wins once you fill its bedrooms.

The four stays in a few lines

The mini loft is the closest thing to a classic bungalow: a small unit in a compound with a house and a second loft, with Starlink, a fitted kitchenette and a terrace with hammocks, five minutes by car from Bacocho, Carrizalillo and Coral beaches. Tribu is the glamping take, with tipis above the bay. Casa Palma gives you a room with its own kitchen inside a villa near Zicatela, so you get the pool. The downtown apartment trades garden for convenience: you can walk to the market and the main bay.

Is a bungalow right for your trip?

  • Good fit: couples, solo travelers, surfers, anyone staying a week or more who wants to cook breakfast and spend the day out.
  • Good fit: travelers on a budget who still want a private bathroom and their own door.
  • Poor fit: families who need two bedrooms, groups who want to eat together inside, or anyone who needs total silence (shared gardens mean neighbors).
  • Check first: stairs and uneven paths if anyone has limited mobility, and whether there is air conditioning if you travel in April or May.

If a bungalow is too small, the next step up is a one- or two-bedroom apartment or a small house; you can filter all of them by dates and guests on our accommodations page.

How to book a bungalow without surprises

When to book

Small properties have few units, so they fill first. Book early for Christmas and New Year, Semana Santa and the July–August school holidays, and for the big-wave surf events in Zicatela. From roughly June to October it is rainy season, rates soften and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts; it is also hurricane season on the Pacific, so keep an eye on the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional forecasts if you travel in September or October.

Questions to ask the host

  • Is the bathroom private and inside the unit?
  • Air conditioning or ceiling fan only? Is there a mosquito net or screens?
  • What is shared: kitchen, garden, pool, grill? With how many other units?
  • Is there hot water, and what happens during a power or internet cut? Small towns on this coast have them, especially in peak season.
  • Does the price include taxes and cleaning, and is there a deposit?
  • How far is a beach where you can actually swim?

Booking directly with the host means you get these answers before paying, with no platform commission added to the rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bungalow in Puerto Escondido cost per night?

On our site, small self-contained stays for two are listed from about 950 to 1,250 MXN a night (roughly US$51 to US$68) in October 2026. Expect higher rates at Christmas, Easter and in July and August, and discounts for weekly or monthly stays in the rainy season.

What is the difference between a bungalow and a cabaña?

Mostly the build. A cabaña is the rustic version, often wood or palm-thatch and sometimes fan-only; a bungalow is usually a more solid unit with its own bathroom and often air conditioning and a kitchenette. Always check the listing for what is private and what is shared.

Which area is best for a bungalow?

Zicatela and La Punta if you surf and want to walk to dinner; Bacocho if you want quiet streets and quick access to the calm bays of Carrizalillo and Coral; El Centro if you arrive without a car.

Do bungalows in Puerto Escondido have kitchens?

Many have a kitchenette with a fridge, a stove or hot plate and basic utensils, and some share an outdoor kitchen or grill. A few have none, so filter for a kitchen if you plan to cook.

Can I swim in front of my bungalow?

It depends on the beach. Zicatela and Bacocho have strong waves and currents and are not for swimming. Carrizalillo, Coral, Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito are the calmer bays, but always check conditions and flags on the day.
