Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: Where Should You Actually Book?

Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are the two big bases on the Oaxaca coast, about two hours apart on Highway 200, and they get compared constantly because they sit on the same Pacific shoreline. They are not the same kind of place. Huatulco is a planned resort area built around a string of sheltered bays; Puerto Escondido is an older fishing town that grew into a surf destination and still feels like a town. This guide sets them side by side so you can book the one that matches the trip you actually want.

The short answer

Book Huatulco if you want calm, swimmable bays, snorkeling, a resort or all-inclusive with kids in tow, and an airport with plenty of flights.

Book Puerto Escondido if you want a living town, surf at every level (from beginner beaches to one of Mexico's heaviest waves), restaurants and nightlife you can walk to, and a house or apartment with a kitchen instead of a hotel room.

Plenty of travelers do both: a few nights in each, or a week in one with a day trip to the other.

Beaches and swimming

This is Huatulco's strongest card. The area is organized around nine bays with dozens of beaches, and many of them are protected coves where the water is calm enough for easy swimming, snorkeling and paddleboarding. Much of the coastline sits inside a national park, which keeps large stretches undeveloped.

Puerto Escondido is more mixed. Zicatela is a powerful, heavy beach break that draws serious surfers and is not a place for casual swimming. But the town also has sheltered beaches, notably Playa Carrizalillo and Playa Manzanillo, where swimming is comfortable and beginners can learn. Surf

Puerto Escondido wins this outright. Zicatela is among the best-known big waves in the country, and the town has surf schools, boards to rent and breaks suited to beginners and experts. Huatulco has surf spots too, but it is not a surf destination in the same sense, so if waves are part of the plan, Puerto Escondido is the base.

Resorts vs rentals

The accommodation is where the two feel most different:

• Huatulco was developed as a tourism zone, so its lodging skews toward resorts, all-inclusives and hotels around Tangolunda, Santa Cruz and Chahué, with apartments and condos mixed in. Easy to book, predictable, and convenient for families who want everything on site.
• Puerto Escondido skews toward independent lodging: villas, condos, bungalows, boutique hotels and private rooms, spread across distinct neighborhoods. Town, food and nightlife

Huatulco's life is split between the marina area of Santa Cruz and the town of La Crucecita, with its central square and restaurants. It is tidy and relaxed, with a quieter evening scene. Puerto Escondido has more energy after dark: beachfront restaurants and bars, live music, and a mix of locals, surfers and long-stay visitors, especially around Zicatela and La Punta.

Getting there

Huatulco's airport (HUX) generally has more flight options than Puerto Escondido's (PXM), including more international and seasonal service, which can make it the easier or cheaper landing point. The drive between the two is roughly 110 km and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. When to go

Both follow the same coastal pattern: drier and busier from roughly December through April, greener and quieter with afternoon rain from May through October. Surf on Zicatela tends to be biggest in summer, which is also low season for lodging. Our month-by-month weather guide applies to both.

• Traveling with young children or wanting a resort: Huatulco.
• Snorkeling and calm-water days: Huatulco, though Puerto Escondido's coves are good too.
• Surfing or learning to surf: Puerto Escondido.

• Nightlife and a town feel: Puerto Escondido.
• Can't decide: split the trip, or base in one and visit the other for a day.
