Flights to Puerto Escondido (PXM): Airlines, Routes, and Timing

Booking flights to Puerto Escondido used to mean picking whichever single daily departure existed and hoping the fare wasn't outrageous. That's no longer the case. Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) now sees multiple daily frequencies from Mexico City on three carriers, plus seasonal direct routes from other Mexican cities that open and close with demand. This guide goes deep on the part most travelers get wrong: which airline flies which route, when schedules actually run, how far ahead you need to book by season, what's waiting for you at the terminal itself, and whether it's ever smarter to fly into Huatulco instead.

Three carriers operate scheduled service into PXM year-round, all connecting through Mexico City (AICM), with a growing number of frequencies from Felipe Ángeles (AIFA) as well:

• Aeroméxico — the full-service carrier, typically 1-2 daily frequencies from AICM, checked bag included in most fare classes, and the most reliable option if your trip connects onward internationally through Mexico City.
• Volaris — the low-cost leader on this route, often the cheapest base fare, but the ticket price only covers a personal item; a carry-on or checked bag is an add-on that can erase the savings if you don't account for it upfront.
• VivaAerobus — the other ultra-low-cost carrier, similar fare structure to Volaris, frequently running promotional one-way fares under 1,000 MXN outside peak weeks.

Between the three, PXM typically sees 4 to 7 flights a day from the Mexico City metro area in high season, dropping to 2-3 in the slowest stretches of the rainy season (June and September).

Seasonal direct routes beyond Mexico City

This is the part most guides skip. Mexican low-cost carriers adjust their route maps seasonally based on demand, and PXM has picked up seasonal direct service from Guadalajara, Monterrey, and occasionally Tijuana — mostly Volaris and VivaAerobus, mostly weekend-weighted (Thursday/Friday out, Sunday/Monday back), and mostly active from mid-November through Easter week, when snowbird and long-weekend demand from those cities peaks.

These routes are not guaranteed to run every year — airlines add and drop them based on load factors — so don't build a trip around a seasonal direct flight without confirming it's actually scheduled for your dates. If it's not running when you search, connecting through Mexico City (a short 1-1.5 hour layover on a good connection) is the fallback, and it's a reliable one: AICM to PXM has enough daily frequencies that same-day connections rarely strand you overnight.

How far ahead to book, by season

Booking timing on this route swings hard between low and high season:

• Regular weeks (May, June, September, most of the fall): 4-6 weeks ahead is plenty. Fares stay in the 1,200-2,200 MXN one-way range and don't move much until the final week.
• December, January, and Easter/Holy Week: book 3-4 months out. These weeks sell out both seats and reasonable prices — waiting until 6 weeks before Christmas week routinely means paying 4,000-5,500 MXN one-way, if seats remain at all.
• Bridge weekends and long weekends (puentes): Mexican domestic long weekends spike demand on short notice. Book 3-4 weeks ahead minimum if your trip lands on one.

Fly midweek when you can — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday departures run 20-30% cheaper than Friday and Sunday, the two busiest travel days on this route.

What's actually at PXM airport

PXM is a small, efficient regional airport — not a place you'll spend hours killing time, which is part of its charm. What to expect: a single terminal building with a handful of gates, one small newsstand/convenience counter, a couple of basic food and coffee stands past security, an ATM, and car rental counters (the usual national brands — Europcar, National, Alamo) staffed for arriving flights. There is no dedicated lounge. Security lines are short outside of the two or three peak arrival/departure banks each day. Because it's so compact, budget 45-60 minutes before domestic departure for check-in and security — you genuinely don't need the standard 2-hour cushion unless you're flying during a holiday-week peak bank.

Ground transport from the airport, in detail

PXM's biggest advantage over almost every other beach airport in Mexico is proximity: it sits just minutes from town, closest to the Bacocho neighborhood. Your options on arrival:

• Official airport taxis: a regulated-fare desk inside arrivals sells zone-based tickets — around 500 MXN for up to 4 passengers to most central neighborhoods. This is the fastest, most predictable option and what most visitors use.
• Shared shuttles (colectivos): roughly 110 MXN per person, grouped with other arriving passengers headed the same direction. Slower (multiple drop-offs) but the cheapest door-to-door option if you're not in a rush.
• Rental car pickup: convenient if you plan to explore Manialtepec, Chacahua, or Mazunte independently, though most visitors who stay centrally in Zicatela, La Punta, or Carrizalillo don't need a car for day-to-day life.
• Pre-arranged private transfer: many vacation rentals and hotels can book a private driver in advance for a fixed rate close to the taxi fare, useful if you're arriving late at night or with a group.

From landing to your bag in hand to arriving at a Bacocho rental, the whole transfer typically takes 20-30 minutes; to Zicatela or La Punta, more like 25-35 minutes.

PXM vs. flying into Huatulco (HUX)

The Huatulco airport (HUX) is the other realistic gateway to this stretch of the Oaxaca coast, and it's worth comparing directly rather than assuming PXM always wins:

The math is simple: unless a HUX flight is meaningfully cheaper, the time and cost of the 1.5-2 hour transfer usually erases the savings. Check both airports when you search, but default to PXM if the fares are close.

The small-plane option: Oaxaca City via Aerotucán

If you're routing through Oaxaca City instead of the capital, regional carrier Aerotucán flies small propeller aircraft between Oaxaca City and PXM in about 30-40 minutes, with one-way fares typically 2,000-3,000 MXN. It's a scenic low-altitude flight over the sierra, but luggage allowances are tight (usually around 15 kg checked) and flights are more weather-sensitive than jet service — afternoon storms in rainy season (June-September) cause more delays and cancellations on this route than on the Mexico City jet routes.
