Entire Place vs Private Room vs Shared Room: Choosing Your Rental Type

What an entire place, a private room and a shared room really mean in Puerto Escondido, who each one suits, and what to ask the owner before you book a stay.

Choosing between an entire place, a private room and a shared room in Puerto Escondido changes your trip more than the thread count or the pool. It decides who you share a front door with, how much you spend per night, and how much of the trip goes on managing logistics. The three options look alike on a search page and feel very different once you arrive.

This guide explains what each type means on the Oaxaca coast, who it suits, which questions to ask the owner before you book, and how the prices compare. For the detail on bathrooms and kitchens in shared setups, see our private room vs shared facilities guide.

What each rental type means

Entire place means the whole house, apartment, loft or villa is yours for the stay. Nobody else holds a key. You get your own kitchen, bathroom and living space, and the only rules are the ones in the listing. Browse them under houses and apartments.

Private room means your own bedroom behind a door that locks, inside a property that other people also use. Depending on the listing, the bathroom is attached to your room or shared down the hall, and the kitchen, terrace and pool are usually common areas. Hotels list their rooms this way too: hotel rooms are private rooms with a front desk attached.

Shared room means a bed in a room with other guests, usually a dorm with bunk beds. It is the cheapest way to sleep near the beach and the most social. You will find it mostly in hostels.

When an entire place makes sense

Rent the whole place when you need space you control. That means families with children who nap on their own schedule, groups of three or more who would otherwise book two or three rooms, and remote workers who need a quiet desk and reliable internet. It is also the right call for stays of a week or longer, when cooking at home saves real money and a washing machine saves a laundry run.

The per-night price looks high, so divide it. A house at several times the price of a room is often cheaper per person once four people share it, and you keep the kitchen. For a month or more, ask about long-term rentals, where owners usually discount the nightly rate.

The trade-off is that nobody else is around. There is no front desk to fix a lock or answer a question, so ask the owner how quickly they respond and who handles problems on the day.

When a private room is the better deal

A private room is the sweet spot for couples and solo travelers who want a locked door, a real bed and a quiet night without paying for a whole house. You usually share the kitchen, terrace or pool with the host or other guests, which makes it easy to meet people if you want to and easy to retreat if you do not. Our private rooms guide for couples and solo travelers goes deeper.

Two examples of the format: a surfer room in a shared villa, where the room is yours and the common areas are not, and a bedroom in a small hotel, where daily service is part of the deal.

When a shared room works

A shared room is for the traveler whose budget is the main constraint and who spends the day outside anyway. It suits solo travelers, surf beginners and long-stay backpackers. You give up privacy, control over noise and often a safe place to leave things, so bring a padlock and earplugs. Our guide to saving money with shared rooms covers the practical side, and hostels vs Airbnb compares the wider choice.

It is a poor fit for light sleepers, families and anyone working remotely. If your sleep matters more than your savings, step up to a private room.

Questions to ask the owner before you book

Listings leave out the details that decide the stay. Send these before paying, and expect a clear answer to each:

  • Who else is in the property? The host, other guests, a family, pets?
  • Is the bathroom attached or shared? If shared, with how many people?
  • Is there hot water, and air conditioning or a fan? Heat and humidity make this a comfort question, not a luxury.
  • What are the house rules? Check-in hours, visitors, quiet hours.
  • Can I use the kitchen, and is it equipped? A "kitchen" can mean a full setup or a shared fridge.
  • Is the internet reliable for video calls? Ask for a speed test if you work online.
  • Where exactly is it? Area matters as much as type. Compare La Punta with El Centro before you commit.

How to decide in three questions

  1. How many people are you? Three or more usually points to an entire place. One or two points to a private room.
  2. How many nights? A long stay favors a kitchen and a washing machine. A weekend does not.
  3. What can you not tolerate? Noise, strangers in the kitchen, or a high bill. Pick the type that removes the one you mind most.

Still unsure? Start with private rooms and compare against all accommodations. For the full range of property types, see every property type explained. For general trip planning, the official Visit Mexico site is a useful starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an entire place and a private room?

With an entire place, the whole property is yours and nobody else has access. With a private room, you have your own bedroom but share the building, and often the kitchen, bathroom or terrace, with the host or other guests.

Is a shared room safe in Puerto Escondido?

Hostel dorms are widely used by travelers here. Use the lockers if they are provided, bring your own padlock, and keep your passport and cash with you or locked away. Read recent reviews for the specific hostel before booking.

Which rental type is cheapest?

A shared room has the lowest price per night. For groups, an entire place can end up cheaper per person than several separate rooms, especially if you cook some meals at home.

Can I rent a private room for a month?

Often yes. Message the owner and ask for a monthly rate, since many offer a discount for long stays. See long-term rentals for places set up for it.

Do private rooms come with a kitchen?

Some do, many share one, and some have none. The listing should say so, but confirm with the owner before booking if you plan to cook.

What should I check before booking a shared bathroom?

Ask how many guests share it, whether there is hot water, and how often it is cleaned. Those three answers tell you most of what you need to know.
