Honeymoon in Puerto Escondido: Private Villas and Romantic Nights
How to plan a honeymoon in Puerto Escondido around a private villa: which neighborhood to pick, what a couple-sized villa costs, what to check before you book and how to spend the evenings.

A honeymoon in Puerto Escondido works best when you stop thinking "hotel" and start thinking "house": a private villa with your own pool, a bedroom with air conditioning, a terrace where the sun goes down over the Pacific, and nobody in the next room. This guide is about choosing that base. It compares the kinds of couple-sized rentals the town actually has, which neighborhood suits which kind of honeymoon, what they cost per night, the questions to ask a host before you pay, and how to spend the evenings once you arrive. For a longer list of romantic activities, see our honeymoon ideas for Puerto Escondido; this post focuses on where you sleep.
Why a honeymoon in Puerto Escondido works (and when to come)
Puerto Escondido is a small surf town on the Oaxaca coast, not a resort strip. That is the appeal for many couples: the restaurants are independent, the beaches are wild, and the best accommodation is in private houses and villas rather than big hotels. Two of you can rent a whole house with a pool for roughly what a good resort room costs, and you get it to yourselves.
Dry season or green season
From November to April the weather is dry and sunny, the evenings are clear for sunsets, and humpback whales pass offshore from December to March. Prices and demand peak around Christmas, New Year and Easter. From May to October the hills turn green, afternoon storms are common, rentals are cheaper and the Manialtepec lagoon's bioluminescence is usually at its brightest. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season officially runs from May 15 to November 30; the US National Hurricane Center publishes the forecasts. Our month-by-month weather guide has the details for your dates.
Private villa, small house or boutique inn: choosing the base
"Villa" covers a lot in Puerto Escondido. For two people, the real choice is between a compact private house with a pool, a large ocean-view villa that sleeps eight, and a boutique inn where someone else cooks. The table uses nightly rates shown on our listings at the time of writing (approximate, they change with the dates) at roughly 18.5 MXN per US dollar.
| Option | Approx. nightly rate | Privacy | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-bedroom private house with pool | About 5,000 MXN (US$270) | Whole house, private pool | Couples who want space, a kitchen and no neighbors at the pool |
| Boutique beachfront inn | About 4,850 MXN (US$260) | Private room, shared pool and beach | Couples who want breakfast, a bar and someone at the front desk |
| 3–4 bedroom ocean-view villa | 8,000–11,000 MXN (US$430–595) | Whole villa, infinity or rooftop pool | A splurge, or a honeymoon shared with a few friends at the start |
| Studio or loft | 1,200–2,200 MXN (US$65–120) in high season | Private unit, pool often shared | Long, budget-minded honeymoons |
Three couple-sized places we would shortlist
- Casa Ámbar, in La Punta: a super-adobe eco-house with two bedrooms, each with a king bed, air conditioning and its own bathroom, a private pool with a cascading fountain, a palapa with a skylight and a sunken lounge. The listing offers daily housekeeping from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., so the afternoons and evenings are yours.
- Casa Palacio, also in La Punta and about 300 m from the beach: a house inspired by Moroccan riads, with two air-conditioned bedrooms, a private pool in a central courtyard, a rooftop for evenings outside, a bathtub and Starlink internet.
- Samora Luxury Resort: a boutique beachfront inn in Santa María Colotepec, about 17 km from town, with a private beach area, an outdoor pool and hot tub, a restaurant and bar. It is the quietest of the three, and you will need a car or taxis to get into Puerto Escondido.
All of them, and the larger options, are on our luxury rentals page; if a pool is the non-negotiable, filter rentals with a pool instead.
Where to stay: La Punta, Bacocho or outside town
The neighborhood decides what your evenings feel like more than the house does.
La Punta: walk to dinner
La Punta, at the southern end of Zicatela, has the densest choice of restaurants, cafés and bars within walking distance, and the rocks at the point are a favorite place to watch the sunset. It is lively, especially in high season. Ask whether the bedroom faces a busy street, and choose a house with walls and a courtyard if you want calm after 10 p.m.
Bacocho: quiet and sunsets
Bacocho, on the west side, is residential, with bigger lots and more private pools, and the airport is about 10 minutes away. Playa Bacocho is a long sunset beach, but the surf is strong: walk it, don't swim it. You will take taxis to restaurants.
Outside town: total privacy
The coast east and west of Puerto Escondido has a handful of beachfront inns and houses where the nearest neighbor is far away. The trade-off is distance: every dinner out is a drive. It suits couples who plan to spend most evenings at the property.
What to check before you book a honeymoon villa
Photos sell the pool; these questions tell you whether the stay will feel private. Ask them in a message before paying:
- Air conditioning in the bedroom, not only fans. From April to October nights are hot and humid.
- Who else is on the property: staff hours, a caretaker's room, or a second unit rented separately next to the pool.
- Is the pool private or shared? "Pool" on a listing can mean a shared condo pool.
- Noise: distance from bars and from the coastal highway, and whether a neighboring house is under construction.
- A swimmable beach nearby. Zicatela and Bacocho are for watching, not swimming; the calmer coves (Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito, Manzanillo) are a short taxi ride from most areas.
- Minimum stay and check-in time, especially if your flight lands late after the wedding.
- Extras: whether the host can arrange a cook, flowers or a decorated bedroom. Ask first; don't assume it is offered.
Romantic nights in Puerto Escondido
Days here are for the beach and the pool. The evenings are what you will remember.
Sunset from the rocks or the roof
The coast faces southwest, so in most of the year the sun sets over the sea. The rocks at La Punta, the stairs above Carrizalillo and the sand at Bacocho are the classic spots; a rooftop at your villa is the private one. For something more active, the sunset horseback ride crosses the Manialtepec river and ends on the beach at Puerto Suelo as the light goes.
The glowing lagoon
About 20 minutes west of town, the Manialtepec lagoon has plankton that glows when the water moves. The bioluminescence tour runs at night and is scheduled around the darkest moon phases, when the effect is strongest. It is one of the few things in Puerto Escondido you can only do after dark.
Whales in winter
From December to March, a whale-watching trip in the morning leaves the evening free. Humpbacks are the main show, often with calves.
Dinner in
The underrated option. A villa with a full kitchen and a table outside means you can buy fish, fruit and mezcal in town and eat on your own terrace, or ask the host about a private cook for one night.
How long to stay and how to plan the week
Five to seven nights is a comfortable honeymoon length: one day to recover from the trip and the wedding, two or three slow beach-and-pool days, one evening at the lagoon, one day trip along the coast (Mazunte and its cliffs are about an hour away by car), and a last night at the villa. Couples who split the week often spend the first nights in La Punta for the restaurants and the last ones somewhere quieter. Book the villa first, then plan the tours around it; most can be arranged a day or two ahead outside the holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month for a honeymoon in Puerto Escondido?
November to April is dry and sunny, with whales from December to March. Avoid the Christmas, New Year and Easter weeks if you want lower prices and quieter beaches. May to October is greener and cheaper, with afternoon rain and the brightest bioluminescence.
How much does a private villa for two cost?
On our listings at the time of writing, a two-bedroom house with a private pool runs about 5,000 MXN (US$270) a night, and large ocean-view villas 8,000 to 11,000 MXN (US$430 to 595). Prices change with the season, so check your dates.
Can we swim at the beach near our villa?
Not at Zicatela or Bacocho, where the surf is strong and dangerous. For swimming, take a taxi to the calmer coves such as Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito or Manzanillo, and always check the flags. A villa pool is the safest option for a swim at any hour.
Is a villa better than a resort for a honeymoon?
It depends on what you want. A villa gives you a private pool and no neighbors, and costs about the same as a good hotel room; a boutique inn gives you breakfast, a bar and staff on call. Some couples combine both: a few nights at an inn, then a villa.
Can the host decorate the villa or arrange a private dinner?
Some hosts can, but it is not standard. Send a message before you book and ask exactly what is possible and at what price.
